I remember back in Desert Storm, gas in the US dropped from over $1 a gallon to the 60 cent range. That’s when the 3K mile oil-change interval appeared. Coincidence? Not in this country when it comes to money!

I’ve seen a Ford 3.8l v6 go 95K miles between an oil change. It was 3 quarts low when it finally got changed (a dumb friend of my dad’s). That engine died at 175K. My own ‘63 F100 had the oil changed only twice from ‘85 to ‘99. It still runs fine. The 3K mile interval is a myth on modern engines.
Shell Rotella is top notch stuff dude. It’s used in working diesels that see more miles than most of us in a year. What’s junk is plain ol Pennzoil. I’ve seen that shit turn into milkshake in an air-cooled Bug engine numerous times.
I think the headline is a bit of a misnomer. If an auto enthusiast follows the 3K mile interval bs, synthetic would indeed be a waste of money. But spending the extra on synthetic for the purpose of extending the interval can be quite cost-effective. Example: I spend $50 on a 5L bottle of LiquiMoly 10W60…
Back in 1997, I was in jail in Iowa (long story there) and I had a cellmate who was in there for shooting up a police car. The way he told it, he lived in the sticks, had a lot of enemies, he said, and so one late night he woke up to some car creeping along his long gravel driveway with it’s lights off. He grabs his…
Torch, I swear, sometimes I think you and I were separated at birth.
Is there any other kind of tranny unless you’re a Komodo Dragon or something?
It’s that one place that is still testing the 0-100mph time of a ‘78 Mercedes 240D because they dunno Metric.
Mid-engine is mid-engine, but if one needs to make a distinction, front-mid and rear-mid are modern elaborations, sometimes necessary. I mean, think of what happens when an Englishman mistakes a bonnet for a boot.
The thing is, there are mid-engine cars out there with a FWD drivetrain moved to the rear and driving the rear wheels. The transmission location has _nothing whatsoever_ to do with whether a car is mid-engine or not.
I’m 41, last of GenX. Longtime rider, I’ve never found HD’s aesthetics appealing. They are overpriced, gear is overpriced, bike shakes on purpose, they are typically unstable over 85MPH. If one wants a good American V-twin cruiser, I say get something built by Polaris like a later Victory or Indian. The Scout 60…
Is this the first time a factory-built, street-legal car has ever been capable of a wheelie off the showroom floor? My own 35+ years of auto brain say yes.
Enjoyed the review. But cmon, that thing aint “almost comically slow”. You want comically slow, my first car was a ‘78 Mercedes 240D. I once tried to race a full transit bus and I lost. You could take that Crosstrek from 0-60-0-60-0 in the time my old 240D would take to hit 60.
Gotta love the flat engines. Many BMW and Honda motorcycles run them, as well. There’s nothing like the sound of a real healthy flat-4 spinning up tho, whether it’s air- or water-cooled.
U wot M88...I’ll see myself out now!
