CBC Radio has been doing this for 10 (ten?!) years:

Maggi sauce is magic (or as my Dutch immigrant ancestors would call it Mah-hee). Substitute it for soy sauce on white rice. Or my favourite - add it to home made chicken and rice soup or turkey and noodle soup after Thanksgiving.

I think he got better, more dynamics as the show went on. Once he got out of that opening block. Maybe it was nerves, maybe it was on purpose to get in a groove. Maybe I just love those four songs so much (especially Courage and Wheat Kings) that I disliked hearing them so far from their album versions vocally.
