I never understood why The Village gets crapped on so much. As far as the twist goes, it is far more plausible than that of Signs. In fact, it is probably even more plausible now considering the Trump era.

I imagine my perspective comes the places I frequent (Reddit and IGN for example). To me, it seems like people were absolutely desperate for something like the second film and that’s why people were really clawing for Neill Blomkamp to make his film.

Very true. I guess I just found it less compelling than the themes explored in some of the other movies. And I think your take further below is accurate. Ultimately, I find a lot to like about every Alien movie, and I really shouldn’t have made so many comparisons between them because I don’t mean to say Aliens is at

I don’t think fans have any sway at all, I simply think that audience’s refusal to accept 3, 4, 5, and 6 is ridiculous. 2 of those are acceptable films, 1 is complicated (Alien 3), and I would honestly say that Covenant is just as good if not better than the first two.

You’re right. Its better.

Seriously, from a structural standpoint, its arguably perfect. You could teach it in screenplay writing classes. Add to that practical effects that pretty much still hold up, and a sci-fi master director at the height of his powers, and you get a movie that its tough to find flaws with

sorry - what i mean to say is Aliens tends to be attacked for what it isn’t, and it’s no coincidence that that often happens when people are re-appraising Alien 3. A lot of the criticisms of Aliens are completely fair (marines dialogue sure, xenomorph demystified slightly sure) but taken on its own terms it’s an

That scene’s on at least one of the DVD releases. You can see Brett basically half alien egg-ized, and Cpt. Dallas weakly muttering to Ripley when she encounters them. It’s a chilling scene, but you don’t really know what’s going on.

I don’t see Hudson as a comedy character though, even if a lot of what he does is funny.

Fair enough. I guess I’m speaking more to my preference than maybe a strong critical analysis. And to put it in that perspective I think is enlightening - it’s true that what makes Alien great is not what makes Aliens great. Maybe it’s that the series is too flexible? Honestly there’s an argument for all 6 films in

I mean, yes, the film does actually want you to laugh at the comic relief. I’m not sure why you think laughing at Hudson is subverting the film’s expectations.

Good points. I’d love a reappraisal of Prometheus as well. And yeah, it’s probably the dark-comedy elements that vibe with me the most on Resurrection. That and I grew up in France, so already had a baked in admiration for Jeunet and what someone somewhere else on this thread referred to as “French sci-fi bullshit.”

I think most people (especially the horrid “fans” of the series) didn’t like the comedic elements of the movie.

I think i might actually be a fan of rushed, disjointed storytelling.

Curious — did you see Aliens in the theater? I’m just trying to figure out how someone could arrive at an opinion so wrong, and all I’m coming up with is that you saw it with the hindsight of the both the hype and all the other movies that followed it.

I will never get the hatred for Resurrection. I said this in another comment but its a really successful merger of Jeunet’s bright, crisp visual style with Alien’s already established design. And it has a ton of great character actors beside the Jeunet regulars.

A zombie priest blessed someone with hot sauce like it was holy water! Who could hate this episode???

This week in Ravi is the Best

I think he’s an absolutely phenomenal producer/writer, an occasionally brilliant lyricist, generally excellent performer, and all-around exciting oddball. I think some of his music counts as some of the cleverest social commentary, and even some of the most introspective writing, to have such widespread mass appeal.

Anyone who says ‘no’ is lying.

Is Power, Corruption, and Lies a perfect album? I’m willing to say yes.
