Agreed, a Cayenne may survive an occasional trip through the local mud hole but it isn’t built for tackling rugged trails on a regular basis, no CUV is.
I have a buddy who off roads a CRV, granted he can’t take it on anything too crazy but he his driving skills are amazing since he is forced to very carefully read the terrain and pick the best lines. Also, it is amazing the difference a decent set of AT tires makes.
Hopefully Toyota will leave out the hybrid drivetrains, over the top technology, and heavyweight complexity, we don’t need another NSX or GTR. I know manufacturers need a platform to show off their latest innovations but for a sports car light, fast, and simple is always the way to go.

Nope, they are as popular as ever out West. Most dealerships usually have 5-10 Wranglers on the lot and maybe 15-20 Unlimited Wranglers. I recently bought an Unlimited after going back and forth between the two. Had I been in the market 20 years ago I would have bought a Cherokee.
Good point. Correct, the Liberty has IFS but it is still a legitimate SUV and is significantly more durable and capable than the current Cherokee.
The 4 door Wrangler aka the Unlimited fills the niche that the XJ Cherokee (and to a lesser extent the Liberty) used to, I don’t think the 2 door Wrangler is any less popular than it used to be.
A buddy’s lunatic nouveau riche mother in law bought one of these “because it is the safest vehicle money can buy.” This conclusion was drawn 100% from the way that it looks, no studies or crash tests were consulted. Maybe this gives some insight into the types of people who buy G Wagons.
