Age likely does play a huge part, just look at oxidation on headlight lenses on post-sealed-beam cars.
While I recognise that bean-counters are essential to curbing the tendency of engineers to allow feature-creep, but something like tube-flaring and simple things like that are dumb.

Some years, it can get a lot colder than that, depending on certain conditions. Also, does that take vibration into account, using a cold start as an example??

I’ve worked for Freightliner, and there are some things they’ve designed that had clearly not gone through cold weather testing, and let me tell you, truckers have to put up with a lot of shit when it gets to -30C or colder. It’s not beyond the realm of possibility that…
