Another Alaskan here, and I work for ADF&G, spend a month working in bear country each year and there is a lot of terrible advice here..... including the comments bagging on bear spray.
Nearby here (600km away) a woman was just killed by a bear as she came out of the bathroom. This is quite rare to happen - last time in Canada was in 1991. Apparently there is one or two deaths in North America a year from bears.
