I feel like Shane Carruth dropped the ball on this one, he intentionally omitted information to give the impression that the story was deeper than it really was.  At the end, you feel like there is more going on under the surface but there really isn't.

That suspension of disbelief you're talking about… we do not know what really happened to Mr. Bates. Perhaps Norman's psychosis seems so sudden because it was preexisting.
