In the linked story, it is noted that the city wants to move the bull statue as well. The artist who created that sculpture is considering litigation to keep it where it is.

It seems the primary cause of failure was the absorbtion of fuel/oil into the wood causing it to swell....

What if the wood was treated prior? Varnished possible, or simply oiled ahead of time to swell, and then properly machined?
