I agree to some extent - I know a lot of people who would be well served by a 15" but thinner and lighter laptop with a ULV or other efficient CPU and an SSD, a different kind of 'consumer high end'

looks handy for HTPC or non-desktop use, normally on a desk it doesn't matter unless you're a real neat freak but on the lap or wherever not on a desk, there'd be less juggling to do

There's a profit in there as well: different companies want to differentiate so they can avoid commodization, get a badge of recognition and charge a higher price on their goods. So the minimalist design is unstable, since there's very little differentiation you can do with it.
