If Democrats think that a relatively small share of Sanders’ primary voters not voting for Clinton in the general election is the reason Trump won, the pragmatic thing to do would be to cater to them.

This isn’t massaging the numbers. More than half of Sanders’ support comes from women. All the numbers you’re citing don’t reflect the share of any of the candidates’ supporters who are women, they reflect the share of women who support those candidates. You’re looking at the map upside down.
