this. NCAA rules don’t apply to random businesses. Anyway, the NCAA claimed for years that things like “DUKE player #3" was not a likeness to an athlete.
I’m absolutely gobsmacked to see a Deadspin writer cite NCAA amateurism regulations as somehow controlling the business activities of an unaffiliated private business.
I love it. All you’re allowed to say about anyone who has died is that they were a good person and your thoughts and prayers go to a family you’ve never met. You can’t even say “dead” or “died,” you gotta roll with “passed away,” even if it was in a flaming car crash, avalanche or tiger attack.
