It didn’t suck out anything. A waxed paper tube on fire may produce a microscopic breeze through the tube but cannot produce a vacuum. The stuff you thought it was pulling out was just its own ash and liquefied wax.

I’m not surprised. One of ear wax’s primary functions is actually keeping water from reaching the inner ear, along with bacteria and fungal spores. By forcibly removing it without an actual, medical reason, you were just opening the flood gates to your inner ear and then developed swimmer’s ear.

There are many videos online showing candling. I have it done, just to try it, by a local Amish. It’s to be done with the candle horizontal to the floor, not vertical. Wasn’t impressed with the results, but if felt cool. No harm, no foul.

It didn’t suck anything out. If you burn an ear candle sitting in a glass, it will still be filled with dark waxy residue, because they’re cheaply made, and the residue is left over from the crappy wax and muslin the candles are made of. They are utterly useless.

Maybe it was a different thing, but this was a cone of paper that you stuck in your ear and lit at the end (not in the ear). It was definitely ear wax though. Ours were colored so that the it was easy to see it was earwax. The candle also didn’t leave much in the way of drippings.
