Thank you for writing this article, and bringing attention to this event and this issue. The lack of comments on this post is startling.
not only living black and trans and feminine, but also OUT and as an activist when it would be easy for her to take advantage of passing privilege and sit the tough stuff out. i can pass as cis, and while i hate when people won’t acknowledge my identity, it sure is nice to not have to be THEE genderqueer person all…
I imagine being a black transwoman is living life with the setting on expert level difficulty. What I’m saying is, Janet Mock is gonna get the highest score possible in this game called life.
This is a wonderful event to publicize, Ms. Mock is right, I can’t think of ever hearing anything about the life experiences or struggles of black trans women.
seriously, why are we not all talking about this? is it a friday afternoon issue??
I kept thinking “surely it’s a Kinja error,” but apparently not.
I was JUST about to post that.
Are there really no comments on this yet (or am I being Kinja’d)? Talk about proving her point.
New plan—you have to use the bathroom that you are dressed like. Skirts use one room, pants use the other, regardless of gender identification. You are just doing what the sign says.
But...but....aren’t you trying to make people go into whatever bathroom matches their genitals at birth rather than the one that matches their clothes?
No no no no no. If you’re trans, you’re not supposed to go to the bathroom at all. Or exist.
Well, that’s just what hetero dudes have done for centuries! That’s normal. Trans people peeing next to you tho, that’s yucky.
Why in the world do they suddenly care about women being assaulted. No one seemed to care when it was a drunk guy trying to grope me in the middle of the street or on the subway or at a concert.
OH WAIT, ITS not about that is it
Dressed like a man? MAN WHO IS TRYING TO POLICE THE LADIES ROOM?
I believe the law mandates that, as soon as the child turns seven, the opposite-gender parent must purchase the child a very convincing sex-change operation. That’s my reading, anyway.
Wow, 7 is still so young and there are many kids who have invisible disabilities or aren’t neurotypical or simply aren’t emotionally or physically mature who will need help much beyond this age to go to the bathroom or who cannot be left alone to wait for their parent/guardian to finish peeing.
Off-topic, but I’m pretty sure that knife was literally stolen from a Power Ranger.
“Shut up, bitch! Trump’ll be the best for you! He’ll do the most for you! Get back in the kitchen!”
Also, if you’re a cis woman who gets all pissy about the fact that so many trans women (in your minds) embrace “stereotypical femininity”
