I feel like (but can’t prove) that Fishbone’s “Party At Ground Zero” used to be in a lot of kids’ movie trailers. Which is great, because the song is super fun in a gonzo way, but is clearly about Cold War era fears of nuclear annihilation.

The bootheel of Missouri is definitely the south, not the midwest. It’s the same latitude as Nashville, and not far north of Memphis. Not many of the characters on this show attempt a southern accent, which in real life they would all have.
It’s a city of 3mil people with one major paper. Yes, the real life analog (the Post Dispatch) would be doing investigative state reporting.
