That’s where hybrid batteries usually go. In the first-gen Civic hybrid it is literally in the seat back. For Prii it’s under the floor of the trunk, for the Fusion hybrids its under the floor of the trunk. Yes, you give up a bit of volume from the trunk, or else sacrifice the spare tire.

Yeah, but a decent brand new one is less than 3K. The real problem is ceiling height. At least they’re much better than the Reseen designs. These look more like an evolution of the Unseen designs, instead of someone trying to imagine what the mechs would look like if they were all malnourished.
