Where are the...guns?

I saw the article and paused before clicking on the link and searching a specific area. I found my brother’s mark...or statistic. The data did not label it with a contributing factor, which sadly makes sense.

Now, what happens to all of the lead from the bullets that are seemingly left on the ground? Does the lead seep into the soil/water table over time, thus poisoning other water sources and living things around it?
