Nah, there are better ways to go about deterring illegal immigration. They landed on cruelty as their favored method because first and foremost they are reactionaries. They’re scared of icky brown people and they want to lash out. Other motivations are subordinate to that reaction.

I mean, you live in Pennsylvania, you should know exactly how Pennsyltuckey a place can get unless you’ve literally never left the city. Just expand the rural behaviors of your state to an entire state and that will pretty much sum up Alabama, Mississippi, and Louisiana.
