The thing is that Japanese doesn't have a character for the "ae". You could string together the kana for a and e, but that wouldn't have the same pronunciation.

To be honest, I never understood Halo's M rating, even back in 2001. But then again, I was possibly a bit jaded due to having played much bloodier games such as the Turok series.
