Eh. It’s definitely hard to reconcile with the petty criminal described in “Mudd’s Women,” but it doesn’t *not* fit, since he doesn’t actually kill anybody.
I’m not crazy about it, but I don’t hate it. And it was a pretty good episode.
It’s been established that Lorca likes to collect weapons. But he doesn’t go around using them to murder people, does he?
That can’t have been the second loop, because Stamets mentions during that loop that he’s seen all of this go down many times already.
Getting rid of Lorca would also rob the show of a lot of its tension. And there’s no way Michael Burnham can be the captain, so they’d need someone to fill that role.
Yeah, I feel like Stamets should have gone to Lorca. “Hey captain, just a heads up...”
I love how his hookup to the spore drive makes Stamets more than a little weird. I dig it.
Exactly! Thank you! That’s the point I’ve been trying to make. It was not a literal “Space Jesus.” It was a parallel religion. Just because 20th century viewers interpret that as Jesus, doesn’t mean it actually is.
The ending with Mudd and Stella was really awkward. I like the fan theories that suggest there’s some kind of backwater politics going on behind the scenes, though. That sort of thing definitely happened in TOS - case in point, Mudd’s Women, where the miners basically refused to supply the Enterprise with new…
Besides, it doesn’t *actually* matter who they were talking about. They didn’t name any names. So in 1960s America, everyone might assume that Uhura is talking about Jesus, but that doesn’t actually mean in the Star Trek universe that the figure is Jesus. As long as Americans perceive it that way.
And yes, I remember that epsiode with the Coms, Yangs, American flag and the Pledge of Allegiance. Easily one of the worst episodes of Star Trek ever. Absolutely terrible.
I think the point was more that a similar religion popped up on this parallel earth as on real earth. Roddenberry was an avowed atheist.
I really like Lorca. He’s obviously suffering from some pretty serious PTSD, but he also seems to have a sense of honor.
They might as well just do it.
Try telling that to all the people sharing those “Star Trek: Orville” memes. They don’t seem to realize this...
Yes, it was intended to be a parallel development of a Christ-like religion. But “son of god” isn’t a uniquely Christian concept, and his name certainly wouldn’t have been Jesus. But I suppose you could call it Space Jesus if you wanted.
Where did I say this wasn’t my brand of sci-fi? I actually like The Orville. That doesn’t mean I have to be a fan of shitty writing.
I’ve seen every episode of TOS, TNG, VOY and most of DS9. Yes, there are some terrible episodes, poorly thought out characters, egregious plot holes, etc, etc.
In case you didn’t notice, I described “The Omega Glory” as shit. “Assignment: Earth” was also shit. I don’t have a lot of nice things to say about the first…
Star Trek does have some truly awful moments.
Eh, I feel like Tilly basically has a positive relationship with everyone.
