If you read the linked article he was attempting to clarify & expand on his original 1965 statements about commiting violence against female partners. It isn’t about men and it doesn’t have to be.
Kind of a lukewarm to cold take, honestly.
One thing I found powerful about the recent Gaugin exhibit at the Arts Institute of Chicago was that they didn’t separate the art from the artist. They showcased all of his work alongside accounts of his child marriages, abuse, racism, and the deleterious effect of tourists like him on Tahitian culture. It was a…
I agree, Thundercats. What being described in this post, keeping Connery compartmentalized, that’s the definition of separating the artist from the art. It’s only been recently, in my lifetime anyway, that more people are seeing a more complete picture and NOT separating the two. This was confusing to me as well.
I’ve seen a good number of reviews and takes that criticize this as a white savior narrative—and I don’t agree, but only because I’ve read the entire series (or rather, what Herbert completed of it prior to his death.)
I am a senior living on disability and in my city, I have managed to live alone in a one-bedroom apartment since my marriage ended seven years ago. This past year has seen a big jump in rent prices countrywide but my city was hit especially hard, having been considered low for years. I had been in full panic mode…

Hi fellow Jezebel lovers! These stories are something that I look forward to every year, I even used to use my breaks just to devour these stories throughout the years. However, to express gratitude for this space, I also wanted to share what it’s meant to me especially in the last year, because it went beyond just…
A few years ago my daughter’s brownie troop spent the night at the Natural Science museum in our city. It was an amazing opportunity for them to see some of the exhibits after the museum closed and take part in a bunch of girls in stem activities. Each group was assigned a different exhibit to sleep in. At the end of…

I love reading these every year, but I’m always too late to post. Hope I can sneak this one in!
There’s been a bunch of replies already & I’m in the greys so this will probably be buried but I’ve thought about writing this since we moved so here we go.
Sleep paralysis is terrifying.

We bought a foreclosed house about 15 years ago. When we toured the inside for the first time , the realtor told us outside that a middle aged woman had lived with her elderly mom there. I tried to take pictures of the guest bedroom hallway and my camera suddenly went bezerk- whirring and heating up. It was fine after…
