I switched vets recently. Two things helped make my decision.
1 - at least two of the vets volunteer their time at the local humane society
2 - they have greyhounds. Sweet, adorable greyhounds.

Rats can live for a number of years. I don't think they're as long-lived as rabbits (7-10 years, iirc?), but maybe 5 years at the top end? Get a couple of young ones. With the dumbo ears. They're adorable.
Rabbits are similar to cats and dogs - sometimes they play well with
others, sometimes they don't. They can (and should be) spayed and
neutered as well - which prevents the whole dying of uterine cancer
situation in the females and probably helps with the humping of stuffed
toys situation for the males.
