I’m reminded of the novel Flowers for Algernon, about experimental treatments that only temporarily provide results, with tragic implications for the person treated.

I’m wondering about the possibility of insurance fraud. It’s chancy to scuttle your ship without being certain of rescue, but there’s little chance of the insurance company raising the wreck to find out what really happened.
