That seems to be the size of it. Though I wouldn't call the left field events "random" or "pointless". From that particular characters' perspective things might seem random, but everything that happens in ASoIaF is a result of something else. The choices of certain characters influence the lives of other people.
Every character in ASoIaF has their own aspirations and ambitions (be they a PoV character or not). Aspirations clash and yes, events rip the characters' dreams apart. I can assure you, nothing in that series is random. All is foreshadowed, especially in the books. And nothing is ever pointless. Events in Ice and Fire have serious implications.
