It's not about Obama winning or losing, though. She's just pointing out the complexities of an issue that most of us are only nominally familiar with.

"I hate feminists." *shoots*

Rich is trash and I've called him trash many a time.

Some of the performances were taped in advance. The bulk of the show aired live, which is why the emcees could mention the protests.

Dear American Friends,

There is clearly a cultural chasm here. That's not really an issue here.

I was just telling you that the problems you listed have actually been considered by the professionals providing you with care. They advise you and prepare accordingly. Your comment could be misleading to other people reading and it needed clarification. It's not like home births are some dangerous crap shoot.

No one is arguing against science or modern medicine. All those interventions come with risks, too. Everything about pregnancy and childbirth requires that risks be compared and weighed. Since the UK also has a significantly lower maternal death rate nitpicking at the infant mortality rate doesn't seem particularly

Show you the data? Fuck off. If you're having a baby, get some informed care and make your own decision. Medicalize the fuck out of your pregnancy but may I respectfully suggest that other women have the right to make their own informed choices without regard to your opinions?

The phrase "calculated risk" sounds like your suggesting that the NHS has run the numbers and decided that a few dead mothers and babies are worth the savings.

They are not playing Russian Roulette with other people lives, 1) they are not forcing anyone to have a home birth 2) midwives receive extensive training more so any midwives in the US and they know exactly what do when it comes to pre-eclampsia 3) a surgeon will be close by or even in the same place in case anything

You're under the mistaken notion that "emergency C-section" results in an immediate surgery. Think more "Call the Midwife" and less "ER". You'll be waiting up to 2-3 hrs from the time they decide you need an emergency C-section and you actually being wheeled into the OR. Plenty of time to get to the hospital.

The study doesn't say "Fuck all the preggos and their unborn children as long as we save a few ££'s!" It also says despite their recommendations pregnant mothers should get to choose. So go ahead, choose that surgery and the hospital. But another woman may choose a home birth. Neither of you are wrong.

It is saving money but by suggesting to go to a birthing center instead of hospital it is freeing up beds for those who need it. Also maternal mortality rate in the US is a lot higher than UK so i would trust NHS over any American healthcare.

I'd like to point out that, in the UK, midwives are highly regulated, like our doctors, while our midwives aren't regulated at all. You should always have a trained professional with you when you give birth, in case something goes wrong. Always.

Reminder: midwives who assist in home births (on average) in the US have no true medical training and no real licensing procedure. Most "nurse midwives" practice out of birth centers which allow for more options and also allow their liability to not be as great. Most "midwives" have very little training.

Also, why does the photograph used seem to be from about 1978? I know you Americans think us ever so quaint, but we're actually in colour these days you know.

Eep. So they just let them out into the world? Are there no regular checkups for baby and mum? My daughter was weighed every single day in hospital, and every health visitor visit thereafter. How do they know mum and baby are ok?!

Yeah not sure why it's specifying mothers, I mean, I know mothers pay for it with tax, but the cost isn't something you think about once you're there.

NICE disagrees based on ample studies and thinks on balance midwifery led units are safer. When you get to dictate NHS policy with your opinions, we'll let you know.
