The trick with titanium rings is that they shatter. When you buy one (i know b/c i had one... then lost it. Wife was with me so she knows haha) they warn you that they shatter and if your finger does swell, the ring will be completely destroyed.

Sorry should have been more clear. Everyone else mentioned how they most likely did it back then so instead of just repeating what they said, i was providing some additional fun info on how people have solved the issue in other scenarios throughout history (amphitheaters, architecture design, etc).
