If the purpose of DRM is to maintain complete control, then it fails because some people always find a way around it. When it fails, that tiny portion of educated people that decide to misuse the powerful technology don't have any restrictions, so what's the point of DRM?

This is good common sense, although I think there are many more ways to incentivize people buying your game.
That's a false preise, though. DRM is there to stop most people from actively trying to get around it, but most people who pirate don't do that. They get an already DRM-free version on the pirate bay and install that. After all, these are infinitely copyable bits, not physical products.
The pirates will still defeat that DRM and people who want to buy and download DLC and can't play it for whatever technical reason, are screwed.
