Yes this can be bad for a system. Console or PC. You may notice that turning off a console isn't always instantaneous. That is because the fans are still running slowly to cool any excess heat. Higher end electronics have a shutdown procedure for a reason.

In the case of laptops if you are going to do this please also remove the battery. L-ion batteries need to have a base charge in order to reach their max. You should never let one run to dead. In fact if you want to reach the longest lifespan possible for a L-ion battery you shouldn't let it drop below 50% whenever…

I have an HP dv5 series laptop with piano black lid, shiny silver keys and hand rests, and a chrome touchpad. Looks fantastic right up until I touch it. I have learned my lesson and now avoid anything that does not have a matte finish.

Simple reasoning: For most of the consoles the system itself sells for less than it's actual cost. However a full set of controllers bough with the console as well as a game or two can greatly decrease that loss if not cancel it out completely.
