Because most of the main female cast are cute / have big eyes compared to the male cast.
Most of what gets popular is deserving of those eye rolls, so it’s fair. You already got one of the best recent ones with Death Parade, so the rest will have a lot to live up to.

You’re jumping to conclusions about Shirobako again. It’s not something that relies on meta humour and otaku in jokes to be good, especially since a lot of it will go right over the heads of the vast majority of the audience. A few names here and there like Gibli, and not at all Hideaki Anno (of Evangelion fame)…
It’s pretty much as if the alt world was the real world, and Kyon had always lived there. Standard sort of romcom, but with Haruhi characters.

Shirobako is an anime about making anime. They’re only in high school for about 10 mins in ep 1. By the time of the main story, all bar one of them have graduated Uni.

That’s still about middle of the pack given how many shows per season. The 2nd season hasn’t been great so far compared to the first.
