I lived in Germany in the late 80's-early 90's (military brat).

Because it doesn't affect them and most college students (i am one) only care about what happens to them and what happens in their own country. The lack of empathy we have for others is sometimes shameful.

Yeah, unfortunately there are a LOT of people in the U.S. who have no concept of what it means to be royalty. It just means "celebrity" to them and celebrities do reality TV all the time. (They're also the same people who think America is the center of the universe.)
