To be completely honest, when I tell people I’m an Army brat and they respond to thank my father for his service, I want to scream. My father has ribbons and awards and accolades and annual days of recognition and a community he can go back to. I have feelings I’m never allowed to express because ‘Murica.

My father was a helicopter pilot in the Army. It was the mid/late 80s so he’d leave for 4 months at a time to go to Honduras and Ecuador. When he’d be home for a few months, I’d greet him in the driveway with a beer so he couldn’t be called away to fly again. I was in elementary school.

My cousin, who is a brilliant engineer, went this route. She had great grades and was an accomplished swimmer but it’s a competitive school and being in the top ten percent has gotten harder because there’s more people up at the very top now. For whatever reason there are more A++ kids these days.
