I agree. The car can control its own actions and give its owner/occupants the best chance of survival, but it can’t control the actions of some pedestrians that may or may not get out of the way in time.

This system would cost a good deal more than $1150 to build yourself. Not saying it’s not marked up, they’re obviously getting volume prices on components, but here’s some current prices for the same basic (i.e. about the absolute cheapest equivalent, not even mid-range) components from Newegg:
