This system would cost a good deal more than $1150 to build yourself. Not saying it’s not marked up, they’re obviously getting volume prices on components, but here’s some current prices for the same basic (i.e. about the absolute cheapest equivalent, not even mid-range) components from Newegg:

Even counting getting banned from Apple events for (4 or 5 years or so?) that, Gizmodo definitely still came out ahead. That post has 14 million views, and that’s not even counting the ancillary ones that were made around the whole story (another 7 million or so).
