The wikipedia article on Sfumato was originally written in 2005 then updated/re-written in 2008 and 2009, but it specifically mentions the mona lisa.

@Dragonfang18: They've been x-raying paintings for several decades, so the idea is not new, but on the other hand somebody working at some museum might be watching futurama and have realized they forgot to do it to the mona lisa, although I'm not sure how old this news is, maybe the x-raying was done quite some time…

@Charles Keledjian: Adobe just makes it available, the sites decide to use it, MS however makes all their stuff use silverlight so it's not a choice by any 3rd party.

They should just have mailed their customers a small note 'don't hold it at the freaking antenna', and have left it at that.
