Grocery stores around my neck of the woods are now treated like night clubs because the demand is so high.
Except there IS a valid reason...for them. Their business has seen a significant increase since all these lockdowns happened. A lot of stores have made more money in the past 2 weeks than they have in the previous 6 months.
Oh god Schreier’s powers have grown... Dissatisfied with merely canceling games he can now cancel stores! GameStop! What will we do! Wait actually this one’s OK carry on..
I now a few Silly Valley veterans who say the same thing. VC actually stand for Vulture Capitalist.
Yeah, we kinda have that already in computerized trains. My public transit system here is like that, for example. There’s no “drivers/conductors” for trains, just a big ‘ole brainbox somewhere that manages them all, because they don’t have to account for anything but themselves.
“I drive a Model 3 and have had it for a year now. The “auto-pilot” feature, which I use mostly on highways and ALWAYS with my hands on the wheel and attention to my surroundings, has improved tremendously in the one year since I got my car.”
so, completely replace everything and then spend more money maintaining it?
the interstate highway system was funded, in part, to break our dependence on transport of goods by rail. if autonomous trucks are going to need their own lanes, isn’t that a step backward? sounds like rail with extra steps, with the cost of “laying track” likely dropped onto taxpayers.
trains already are largely autonomous
Some people are afraid to fly. Some people enjoy a leisurely pace.
There are already autonomous rail systems and have been for decades at airports like Orlando.
I get the part about empty trains - gotta get the money somehow - but the way to increase ridership is to improve the experience. I’ve thought about this from time to time.
What’s this about not eating things that are on fire? Who knew? Thanks for the tip! Sincerely, Burnt-Lips McGee.
I am one of those “capitalism is evil” people. The fact that it’s less destructive than other systems is faint praise.
I think part of the problem is just like when Tesla decided to call their driving assistance system “Autopilot.” It is an autopilot in that it will follow directions and hit waypoints, but that doesn’t make it in any way an actual pilot.
Same here. A professional truck driver put it best on a 60 Minutes piece recently:
Yup. The only way I really see it working any time in the near or even not-so-near future is dedicated roadways that eliminate the vast majority of potential variables.
I’m right there with you. I’ve seen saying the same thing throughout this entire self-driving hoopla, and people keep saying “but computers react faster! Computers can see things you can’t! They have lidar!”. Either these people aren’t understanding the restrictions of the available tools, or they have seriously…
Along the way, he also became a disbeliever, mainly because of the problem with edge cases, or solving for obstacles and other things on the road a self-driving car will encounter that it doesn’t usually do. That could be a deer, for example, or challenging weather conditions, but each case is different, and it…
