what if those supposed Pokeballs were actually Voltorbs and that “trainer” was a Team Rocket suicide bomber in disguise?

Well, in Pokémon, you walk around with Pokéballs visible and have the appearance of a trainer... in training - normal people won’t attack/can’t be fought.

man, here I was thinking they might have a section in there where.... you know.... can lift weights and exercise?

I don’t know why, but I was expecting an actual Pokemon Gym to be a place where I fought people to get a badge instead of a...you know an actual gym.
