I’m not saying the meme buyers aren’t capitalists, I’m saying that they’re better capitalists than anyone shorting.

I refuse to believe this isn’t being egged on by other hedge funds. I’m sure there are competitors would would love to buy cheap portions of Melvin Capital.
Exactly. They are down playing this as “internet lulz” but it’s actually really well thought out financial strategy. They identified stocks that were ripe for a short squeeze and then organized it. Its fucking awesome and even though GME was a unique situation hedge funds should be terrified of shorting anything right…
Reading a bit about r/WSB, there are a lot of people on there doing things they can’t afford to. They make incredibly risky bets on the market, many times using margin so they can bet money they don’t even have. Multiply that by the 3.2 million people (as of this writing) who follow the sub and the per-person amounts…
I guess if you retire or cash out in the middle of a depression or recession you might lose more money than you invested; but otherwise if you just invest in the market, you will money in the long-term. It grows dependably.
AMC wont have as much upside anymore I suspect but it could still be fun. My strategy invest as little as wont be missed if you blow up. Remember, all this shit isn’t really “investing” its gambling. Real investment doesn’t explode with 200% returns in a day lol.
Dude that’s not really the point. No one is saying that it’s right when corporations do it. What we are saying is that it’s extremely disingenuous to suggest this is a movement against capitalists, when it’s allowing another group of capitalists to get rich of them.
You’re getting played, man.
Also, a lot of the…
Yeah and that’s my biggest issue with all this. This is being presented as “regular joes getting whats theres” but what kind of regular joe has enough cash lying around that they can make moves like this.
It’s kinda like Epic getting into a fight with Apple: Yeah, they have a point and the result could end up helping…
That’s the problem. The big names pushing this the most from what I’ve seen are the day trader lot who, while it may not be a strict “syndicate” are still corralling and pushing those novices to do certain things. And it’ll be those novices who’ll be holding the overpriced crap when the marshallers cash in their huge…
Dont buy the “OMG, memes!” narrative. This was actually pretty savy investing. People identified a stock that was EXTREMELY vulnerable to a short squeeze and made it happen through the power of the internet.
Hope this goes higher: shorting is very profitable exactly *because* it’s also incredibly risky, which is why buying on margin was a big part of what caused the Great Crash, and shorting is more-or-less the same thing with extra steps.
Fuck hedge funds, but this is going to hurt a lot of people, inside and outside if the financial world. These people who are trying to manipulate the stock are going to get fucked too. They think they are smarter than the entire financial system, but brag about manipulating the market on Reddit. They lack the tact to…
The key thing to keep in mind is that, regardless of the wackiness of what’s going on on the /r/WSB board, the strategy here is ironclad-solid: Short-sellers got overexposed, over-bet on a struggling company to go bust faster than they naturally would, got surprised by good news, and are being pantsed as they’re…
WSB is full of day traders.
“Even Michael Burry, GameStop’s original booster, called the stocks recent exploits “unnatural, insane, and dangerous.””
You look look like random garbage happening for shounen-esque reasons.
When forced to choose to slide to the Left or slide to the Right, Capitalism will *always* choose to slide Right.
Is this what Kotaku does now? This is Buzzfeed levels of journalism.
I think Ian should show a shrink where on the teddy bear the US military touched him.
You dropped a bit of bias on your journalism, Ian.
(Not that I am supporting the military, at all, but Twitch is not the place for these complaints, and their responses seem pretty standard, not “whiny”. Also, I’d leave the Nazi comparison to sensationalist websites).
