This. I would buy a car or truck with sliding doors. The mazda5 was great in that aspect. The doors where light and easy to operate. I would have bought a mazda five if they ever put sky active in it or at least priced it to match its lack of investment.

A lot better than a human driver, likely. It would likely have some sort of sonar (or other sensor) that would detect the rider approaching which already puts it leaps and bounds beyond most drivers.

Gas getting 5-10x more expensive than it is now and or massive increases in congestion. Riding becomes safer as fewer brodozers and massive brick-UVs are on the road and the remaining vehicles are rarely single occupant. Making driving un-affordable for many and unlikely unless absolutely necessary.

Toyota’s issue was mostly a witch hunt. The government was invested in a down and out GM and muricans where growing to the idea of buy american (american cars made in mexico that is). Toyota’s fine was garbage trumped up to support domestics. GM got kid gloves and Toyota got the shaft.
