To be fair - Jeff Beck was/is by far the best guitarist that came out of the Yardbirds. Page is the best arranger/songwriter. Clapton needs someone to push him (John Mayall, Jack Bruce, Gregg Allman) and even then, he’ mostly decidedly milquetoast.  Hell, Peter Green was a better guitarist with John Mayall.
