So there’s a risk assessment test called the Static-99, it’s pretty universally used by courts, etc., when sentencing a sex offender. One of the lead authors of the study/co-creator of that test, I believe his name is Dr. Hanson, kept on studying, and he has updated his findings.

I feel like you have opened a conversation that victims/survivors rarely get to have a voice after telling. I was raped at 16. It suuucked. But I’m not crushed because some weirdo acted out on me. That’s his crazy and I got my own stuff to deal with. I’m not ruined or damaged although I ache for the people who are as

I think you hit the nail on the head. No matter how a survivor feels, their feelings are valid. There are so many of us (especially those of us who have no been molested, myself included) who can’t imagine that someone who has been raped/molested could actually... be okay? Move on with life? Not wish their

Well don’t you see, girls like me who were ~smart~ and went to ~good schools~ and ~college~ and just happened to want to have sex with older dudes, obviously those are good. Girls who are in ~remedial~ classes or who aren’t on a ~college prep track~ need the state to look out for them, otherwise they'll end up another

Either they have done their time and we release them to live their lives, or we keep them in jail if they are so much a danger to others that we have to monitor and micromanage their lives indefinitely. I hate sex offender registries. Yes, these people did BAD THINGS, but they presumably have served their time and

18 and 14 is a little off but not that weird to me. I knew quite a few seniors dating freshmen and no one was really disturbed by it. That was in a different era though. My wife and I started dating when I was 27 and she was 19 and that felt slightly weird at the time but 10 years later we don’t even think about it.

There is absolutely nothing constitutional about a program that puts all prior offenders on a registry. Is there a public registry for murderers? No. There’s also the minor matter of putting sex offenders on the registry on an ex post facto basis. These folks were convicted of the crime, told what their punishment

I wasn’t attacking you. I was attempting to point out that while the sex offender registry was, in the wake of the 1993 Jacob Wetterling case, created to target and track the sorts of neighborhood pedophiles that you describe, it hasn’t proven effective because the vast majority of pedophilia cases are not perpetuated

Fun story, I used to volunteer with them. 98% of their attendees dont get any further charges ir the recidivism rate is ridiculously low. And keep in mind, this means any charges, including things like violating parole terms not to drink alcohol). I volunteered because I believe in cutting out sexual violence from our

Legislating sexuality is weird as fuck and kind of squicks me out, but I guess the alternative squicks me out more... In a perfect world we’d all be healthy and not have hang ups about sex and wouldn’t need laws governing sexual behavior. :(

It was totally not exploitative or fucked up when I had “everything but sex” with my 4 years older boyfriend at age 14. Perhaps we were the exception, but I don't like how this conversation removes the agency from sexually mature teenagers, most of whom (in statutory rape cases) are female.

It’s a lot easier to let go and move on when your situation was taken seriously. I wonder if all the anger at child abusers is partly because so many abusers are never held accountable, so so many abused are not validated.
