I'm okay with his screenplay being scrapped. The Hellboy movies were written like a trashy sitcom, and something tells me he wasn't going to approach this project like Pan's Labyrinth.

Del Toro definitely oversaw a ton of visual development while he was on the project. His vision sounded pretty radical, so I'm sure Jackson dismissed some of it, but I'll bet there was tons of top notch concept art just sitting there waiting for Jackson when he deigned to return. I can't wait for the art book to come…

One thing I'll say for the Star Wars prequels: precious little O 'n T. Though at least the Hobbit trailers have looked more blue than teal. As far as going back and fiddling with his work, I have to say I wouldn't mind Jackson adjusting Gollum's appearance in Fellowship to fit the others.
