Can't speak to Taiwan on this one, but I lived in the PRC in the mid-'90s and Oh.My.God you could not escape Richard Marx. He was held up as the paragon of American pop music (Beatles? Elvis? Vaguely heard of them…). Richard Marx daily, blasted out of those Communist public loudspeakers (ironically).

This is basic stuff. Why is it that TV writers so consistently give the impression of never having set foot on a university campus? I'm pretty sure they're all college-educated, usually from elite schools in fact. And yet college life - even in passing, like here - is always caricatured to an absurdly unrealistic

Dunno about Canada, but in the U.S., yes. Happens all the time. Though I suppose not often in the well-heeled suburbs.
