Fair. It was forgettable. Maybe because it followed (the admittedly charming Chris O’Dowd) one person around it just got tired, no matter the crazy relatives.

Its a joke that goes on for too long because the setting, being fake, doesn’t have much to mine?
Yeah. All the other bbc productions I think explored the ways a well-to-do or at least well-kept person would be living in such time. The particular versimilitude of a slum production...is going to be lacking.
I think its the schadenfreude. At least the BBC productions seem to be of the quality that makes the comeuppance of overly-privileged assholes both delicious and informative.
THESE PEOPLE! They get me steaming especially when the wife begins to describe how what they are doing is so much better than studying history because they are living it.
OMG. In my neighborhood growing up this girl would have had all the kids coming around trying to trade things with her so that we could have one go at the amazing obstacle course. I am legit jealous of her.
The article lists more than a handful of books published. about the Mitford sisters in the past five years, and that’s just the tip of the bibliographic iceberg. So yeah, they are kind of a big deal. But fortunately none of us know everything—- it would make it super duper boring to read nonfiction.
I think that that kind of ‘story’ vs. reality is actually the point of this movie. Even, (ugh) as Joan Didion says, the stories we tell ourselves.
looks like he put some product in and combed it all back and let it lie where it lay. Don’t worry, as a curly headed monster myself, trust that that left side will flop down eventually.
Yes! I love complicated realistic characters and messed up psychology, but man, if it isn’t good writing, I am going to get really tired of reading about shitty people really quickly.
Yes, the Ivy League as a noun means something very specific, though I think when used as an adjective, is increasingly unspecific. Its a sports conference of 8 schools who play each other.
Oh right! Didn't they torture her to see if her story would change? Thumbscrews? Jayzus.
Right?! I can't guess at motivation, but the effect wasn't very palatable...
Shout out to Judith Merkle Riley’s The Serpent Garden which I read 1000x in h.s. It’s about a female miniature portrait painter for Henry VII’s court. Lush.
Its the pictures. Hundreds of pageant pictures.
Hey! Yeah that is certainly one of the most likely theories. I think the reason that it is not considered to be an air-tight one is that there are a lot of holes that have to be ignored and a stack of assumptions for the theory to work.
D’aww! This character seems like the adorable, earnest older Mother I wish I had... but then think I probably don’t really want in real life!
I read it later and it had a lot of themes about temptation. All that stuff about how the doomed Nephilim were created out some hot Angel/Human loving...not surprised it went over my 11 year old head.
Dear god I hope it is. Also because it would mean one of the main themes of the book about love and acceptance would actually be, you know, listened to and have an impact.
Yeah. This book deals with intergalactic travel and other dimensions...pretty sure European high fantasy would inform very little of the context.
