I’ve been in IT, in Texas for over 20 years and have worked with IT pros in Florida for several years. I have never once heard anything like this expressed by anyone. And I know no one I’ve ever worked for would put up with this kind of attitude.

The thing is, much of basic research doesn’t look immediately useful. But the knowledge gained from it feeds into the practical sciences which do improve our lives directly.
