Yes, but on the one hand are people upset about a marginalized group continuing to be marginalized and wanting stories to be more inclusive, and on the other hand are homophobes and bigots. One of those groups is more worthy than the other, and the corporate impulse to try to find a way to not offend the latter group…
If it’s always relegated to unnamed background characters, then it’s not presented as normal and mundane, but rather as fringe and disposable. It’s like how including a single black character with a few lines in a story was once considered real diversity, but now we know it’s just box-checking.
