Yeah, when I read “champion for democracy” my first thought was “oh, so a white lady”. It’s easier to be a champion for democracy when you’re not bogged down by the whole “acknowledge my humanity” struggle that women of color have been dealing with.

This actually really pisses me off. We lobbied for the $20, to replace a bad dude who didn’t favor paper currency and would likely have hated being on it. Easy decision, right? Nope. Instead they give us the $10 - a less popular currency - and we have to fucking share it with the dude already on it. Gee. Thanks.
Somewhere Alexander Hamilton just threw his hands in the air and asked ‘The fuck did I do?”
Was gonna yell, but then I laughed. A+, friend.
More Rachel Dolezal, yeesh. Look, I apologize if someone else has made this same point but could someone explain to me how she’s any different from Caitlyn Jenner?
Guys, guys, if she feels black, we can’t argue with her feelings. Screw other people’s lives and history, Rachel needs to express herself.
Sure, a white, college educated women, is having an identity crisis. BOO HOO WHITE LADY IDENTITY CRISIS.
Yeah that might fly if she hadn’t sued Howard University for discrimination and claimed it was because she was white. This wasn’t when she was 5 years old, she was applying for a teaching assistant job at Howard. So her story changes to suit the questions being asked.
I wonder what she identified as while she was suing Howard...
So you’re saying that because she’s rich, it’s not a big deal that the cops acted out of line and mistreated her? Cause she can just go back to her nice apartment and go to brunch?
I do see what you mean, but ... her daughter informed her friends of their Constituional rights at a time when they needed such information. I have a hard time hating on her for that, even if she only knew because ‘her mommy is a civil rights attorney.’
This girl sounds incredibly bad ass, and so does her mother. And fuck the fucking misogynistic media.
Would YOU wanna be the person who questioned the racial credentials of the new president of your NAACP chapter? How bad would you look if you were wrong? I think there was plenty of talk but no one wanted to be that person who asked her if she was really black.
What would a vetting process actually look like?
“we’re trying to have a goddam society here” — I love this so much.
I’m feeling super hopeful. A very, very powerful man can be knocked down a peg for saying something awful that a little while ago would have passed unnoticed. Progress.
I agree with this. I think it’s important to recognize that we haven’t fully worked out trans acceptance as a culture yet - even people who are accepting and supportive of trans people can have identity issues in response, because, though we have been better lately, as a culture, at teaching people what an appropriate…
That was my initial reaction. Now, after mulling it over for a bit, I kind of think both Burkett and Sarah Miller are exaggerating and letting their emotions get the best of them. I mean, in some ways, Burkett makes some good points: we didn’t come this far in rejecting traditional gender roles and stereotypes and…
Not to diminish the unique nature of your experience, but your transition sounds a lot like teenaged girls practicing being women. A lot of us go through that same phase when we are first have permission to use make up, shave, and wear heels. I know I definitely had my “trying too hard” to be a woman phase, too. Being…
Every time we wade into gender essentialist waters, I just remember Julia Serrano’s comments after starting hormones —that her victory was when she could wear the fumpiest, unfeminine clothing ever and people would perceive her as a woman.
