Outside of all these practice realities, I think it’s growing ever-more-clear that a government shutdown means that this just isn’t working anymore... This can not be what the founders of this nation intended for us.

No deposit. In all seriousness, I got a fair deal on the car and good value on my trade. I won’t feel bad about the purchase.

This was the most awkward automotive press event I’ve ever been to, and I’ve been to a bunch of them. The VW employees weren’t really jovial even amongst themselves, which is a bad sign.

Das Sad.

Preach, my fellow ram.

Absolutely, 100% wrong. The prices are going to plummet. Once a recall is announced, resale will stay low, because of the cost of retrofitting emissions control devices/the increased cost to operate the vehicle/bad press.

This is one of the worst ideas I have ever read. It’s the automotive equivalent of telling someone to buy Lehman Brothers in mass quantities in early September 2008.

Exactly. There’s no windfall here. You just have a car that performs much worse than is advertised, and when the market hits equilibrium it should reprice to reflect its actual, terrible performance. No one wants a terrible car, no matter how scarce it is.

Your analogy fails — the difference with “If the government outlawed the making of new Dodge Charger Hellcats because of some technicality that says no new sedan can have over 700 horsepower” — is that the 700 hp legal Hellcat is amazing and works great and is perfect legal today, and if grandfathered in by a later

I can’t consciously recommend buying a TDI. People ask me for recommendations on cars all the time, based on my day job. I’ve recommended VWs to many people. They made me/us all look foolish, they lied to their very dedicated customers and the environment is the biggest victim.

I was very close to buying a 2010 A3 TDI hatch a few weeks ago, my wife liked the 2010 RDX turbo more......womp womp

I disagree, my wife, who is not a car person in anyway, neither are her co workers, and they have been talking about it all day yesterday. This made major headlines outside of the car world, and affects many people, especially those who are environmentally concious. VW already has issues when it comes to reliability

as a former (dissatisfied) VW TDi owner, reading these news postings is like basking in a glorious tidal wave of schadenfreude.

Someone who VW has moved to Bermuda with a nice fat paycheck to shut the hell up.

First the Greek bailout, then the refugee crisis, and now this. I'm guessing the German government will have to intervene somehow, because this is just unbelievably terrible. I don't know how they can recover from this. There aren't enough GTI enthusiasts in the universe to make up this much money.

Someone knew. Someone asked for this feature. The Board really messed up. Who was in charge of development again for the past 4 years?...

Well at least it’s only like 10.5 million more than we thought.

I’ve got a super soft spot for the Equus. Both it and the Genesis are damned good cars. The only problem are the dealers, I’ve only found one dealer that I would buy either of them from. The other ones act like all they’re selling are $13K econoboxes.

Dentists make good dough. I remember reading a piece in Car & Driver about how douchetastic Ferrari is to their customers. A periodontist from Houston put down a 10% deposit on a Ferrari, and never heard from the dealerhship for almost a year. When he finally went in to see what was up with his order, he was told that

My dentist has a Bentley and a Maserati. Things must have changed a bit since the 80’s for dentists.
