My dad told me about that scene before I'd seen the movie myself - he saw it in the theatres when it first came out, and the entire theater jumped a mile.
I got around to watching that movie mostly because I wanted to see what all the fuss was about that scene. Suffice to say, the fuss was right.

You're right there's a not insignificant amount of kills in the other Batman movies - I saw a video on YouTube that counted them, there's more than you'd expect.

I was in the children's section of the bookstore with my kid the other day and I picked up the Batman origin story for 5-7 year olds. I wondered how they would depict the brutal murder of Bruce Wayne's parents in a kid-friendly manner.
