As far as I'm aware he was killed on suspicion of using a counterfeit bill. It's not been proven that he even did it, let alone knowingly.

Yup. If using a counterfeit twenty was worthy of a death sentence (which it isn’t, so what the fuck is with that argument!?) then the US population would be around 20% of what it is now. They’re so common that most home/rent insurance policies include coverage for counterfeit bills.
