Criminal negligence because, they were irresponsible in storing the firearm in an appropriate place considering their living circumstances (two small children running about). In another situation, the 3 year old kid may have shot someone else and not the parents, due to this irresponsibility.

I can see your point. Ultimately, I think more emphasis needs to be placed on gun safety and management. I mean, we put so my emphasis on road safety and driving and we should—we're talking about maneuvering a 2 tonne metal cage on an imperfect surface. Not fully comparing the two scenarios but a gun is a dangerous…

Exactly! Well said. Why would you *not* use the safety feature on an object especially when that object is dangerous in itself? Not only in circumstances where the gun ends up in the hands of children, but also say, if it end up in the hands of some crazy/deranged person.
