I think the scene with the priest confirmed she wasn't an impostor. Elias asked to be driven to the police station and asked if the priest would explain his story to the police. The priest said he would but he took Elias home instead. At the house, the priest interacted with the mother as if he knew her.

Yes, you're right, the camera does pan away and he cut her accidentally.

I agree. I just watched it. There were some scenes where I watched through the spaces of my fingers which were held up against my eyes. However, it is more psychological terror than gruesome terror. I think the "torture" scenes were necessary.
